Portfolio Over Certificates: What Employers Actually Look For
Nadeesha Perera

We asked 40 hiring managers across marketing, design and software companies in Colombo a simple question: what makes a junior candidate stand out? The answers were strikingly consistent.
Proof of work beats proof of study. A candidate with three real projects — even small, self-initiated ones — consistently outranks a candidate with better paper qualifications and nothing to show. As one design director put it: 'A certificate tells me you attended. A portfolio tells me you can do.'
This is actually liberating news for anyone starting out. You don't need permission or employment to build proof. Marketers can grow a small brand's social presence. Developers can ship apps that solve their own problems. Designers can publish unsolicited redesigns with written rationale.
The second theme: communication. Nearly every manager mentioned the ability to explain decisions — why this approach, why this trade-off — as the differentiator in interviews.
Our advice to every CeyLearnia student: treat every course project as a portfolio piece. Polish it, document your thinking, and publish it. That's why our programmes are built around real deliverables, not just quizzes.
